WINNING ENTRY
Tempelhofer Feld is one of the world’s largest open urban spaces and has remained a uniquely contested site in Berlin since its closure as an airport in 2008. Repeated public engagement processes have consistently led to the same conclusion: a clear rejection to new development on the site.
The winning proposal is anchored by a clear and deliberate vision: to preserve and enhance the Feld’s existing qualities - ecologically, socially, and spatially. The proposal restores ecological function by removing paved surfaces to improve soil health, structuring soil layers, and guiding rainwater infiltration. Planting recommendations establish self-sustaining, climate-resilient ecosystems. Existing buildings will be renovated in a manner that is resource-efficient, responsive to heritage protection, and inclusive to the public through participatory design strategies.
Ultimately, the proposal views Tempelhofer Feld not as a static monument, but as a place of continuous and communal stewardship. To protect the Feld is not to halt its evolution, but to support and amplify its existing qualities, acting as an example for other major cities in a time of climate change, overheating and species endangerment.
